Foundations for a Thoughtful Jewish Life

This year the Temple of Israel will begin a two year program of learning from a curriculum from the Shalom Hartman Institute called Foundations for a Thoughtful Jewish Life. The curriculum is a sophisticated introduction to deep philosophical questions about Judaism related to four pillars of Jewish Life: Faith, Ethics, Practice, and Peoplehood. This year we will focus on the first two pillars, faith and ethics, and for the 2023-2024 school year we will learn the second two pillars together.

This course was designed as a text study course, and engages with a broad variety of texts both ancient and modern and everything in between. It was also designed to be accessible and engaging for both newcomers to Jewish thought, and those who have more broad background of Jewish knowledge.

Our class will meet on Wednesday evenings, from 7:15 - 8:30pm.  The class will be in-person with a Zoom option available if there is enough interest.  A more detailed description of each course is forthcoming. Donations to help offset the cost of materials is welcomed.

You may register on this website for these classes.  Go to the Temple calendar from our homepage and click on the September 21st class, then click Go To Event.  Scroll down to the bottom of the event page to register. You may also call Lindsay in the office (864)292-1782 or email office@templeofisrael.org.
